Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during the summer months to extend the amount of daylight available in the evening. This means that in the spring, the clocks are set forward by one hour, typically on the second Sunday of March, and in the fall, they are set back by one hour, typically on the first Sunday of November.

Daylight Savings Time Changes

The practice of Daylight Saving Time is used in many countries around the world, although not all countries observe it, and the start and end dates can vary.

The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of the available daylight during the summer months when the days are longer. By shifting the clock forward by one hour, it is possible to enjoy an extra hour of daylight in the evening, which can be especially beneficial for activities like outdoor recreation, tourism, and commerce. However, some argue that DST can have negative effects, such as disrupting sleep patterns, causing confusion, and potentially increasing energy consumption.

After a long, dark winter, our discernible sunnier evenings will turn even brighter as we adjust our clocks and sleep schedules.

Retailers often have great deals, markdowns, doorbusters, and discounts during Daylight Savings weekends.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks during warmer months so that darkness falls later.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, the clocks will “spring forward” one hour as we return to daylight saving time (DST).

Daylight Saving Time History

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months to extend evening daylight and conserve energy. Benjamin Franklin first proposed it in 1784, but it wasn’t widely adopted until the 20th century.

Daylight Savings Time

Germany became the first country to implement DST in 1916, as a wartime measure to conserve coal. The United Kingdom followed suit, and soon after, other European countries adopted DST. The United States first adopted DST in 1918 during World War I, but it was repealed in 1919 due to opposition from farmers and other groups.

During World War II, the United States and others reinstated DST to conserve energy. After the war, some countries abandoned DST, while others continued to observe it. In the United States, DST was standardized in 1966 with the Uniform Time Act, establishing a consistent start and end date for DST across the country.

Since then, many countries have adopted DST, but some still do not observe it. In recent years, there has been some debate over the usefulness of DST, with some studies suggesting that it may not actually conserve energy and could negatively affect public health and safety. Nonetheless, many countries continue to observe DST as a way to extend daylight hours during the summer months.

Which States Don’t Use DST?

Most of Arizona and Hawaii don’t use DST. Indiana introduced DST in 2006.

As the warmer spring arrives, nothing could be nicer than having more time in the evening to enjoy it.
